The graduate programme "Protein Dynamics in Health and Disease" organised in February 2007 two 2.5 day workshops entitled "Effective Scientific Writing". The workshops covered complex topics such as

- Optimising the writing process

- Structuring a research paper

- Organising information effectively

- Writing strong titles and subheadings

- Linking information and generating flow

- Producing the correct emphasis and tone

- Optimising verb usage

- Incorporating a variety of sentence structures

- Writing concise and precise sentences

- Using punctuation correctly and effectively

- Using British versus American English

- Improving critical reading and editorial skills

The workshops were held by the communication trainer Ruth Willmott (PhD), who could offer, due to her research experience in Life Sciences, customised workshops for research scientists dealing in various fields of biology and biochemistry. The workshops were demanding and imparted plenty of knowledge within a short period of time involving a lot of hands-on activities using the well-structured workbook. Not only therefore but also because of the interactive training the workshop was evaluated by the participants to be "excellent". We are looking forward to working with Dr Willmott again.
