Entrepreneurship Seminar 2007, Nov. 05-07, Chiemsee, Fraueninsel

In November 2007, the graduate school went to the monastery of Frauenchiemsee to get an idea about the complex process of starting a compay. The Entrepreneurship Seminar was organized with emphasis on crucial steps for founding and funding a company regarding the background of natural scientists. Questions were raised and discussed concerning the different stages of turning an idea into a business out of life sciences.

Recognizing the potential of an idea and turning it into a business concept was brought closer by Andy Goldstein (Executive Director, LMU Entrepreneurship Center) who was talking about the decisions which had to be made in his own career. Dr. Barbara Zimmer (Examiner for Organic Chemistry, European Patent Office) was invited for giving an insight into the intellectual protection of inventions and led through the process a patent has to pass. Insights into the problems of the initial funding and preparing a business plan were given by Zoltan Elek (Co-founder, Landwärme). Chrisoph Zinser (Deputy Head, LMU Office for Research and Technology Transfer) presented the early funding stages from getting started. Furthermore, the procedure of raising venture capital was presented by PD Dr. Axel Polack (General Partner, TVM Capital). As an example for a university spin-off, the company Wilex was discussed in detail, presented by its founder Prof. Olaf Wilhelm (CEO & Chairman of the Board, Wilex AG).

Besides the information and experience handed on by the above speakers, different topics as The Elevator Pitch, Writing a Business Plan and Discussions on several Case Studies were prepared in small workshops.

This three day seminar gave an insight into a field, which before was never touched so intensely. We were impressed about the support one can get throughout the different stages a start up has to go through.
